“He is dead,” stated the doctor who delivered me. I was born prematurely on August 20, 1917 in a house in the 900 block of East Standifer Street in McKinney, Texas. My Grandmother Drake, who was present at my birth, later told me there was no sign of life in me. Thinking I was dead, the doctor laid me on the foot of the bed, and he and my grandmother continued to work with my mother, who was in very serious condition. She had been ill for several weeks before I was born.
