Throughout the history of Israel, harvest represented a time of great jubilation. The Hebrews recognized the reaping of the harvest as God’s provision for the months to come. It was also the time to pay off old debts. For those who loaned other people money, harvest time meant pay day. The harvest also provided many of the essential herbs that were used for natural
healing. In light of this, we can understand Jeremiah’s disappointment and discouragement that harvest time for Israel had come and gone:
